8/12/2023 0 Comments Franz wagner michigan![]() I didn’t want to just do some quick “see ya later.” I wanted to say thanks, for the time of my life. So that’s why I wanted to write this letter. I’ve just truly loved being a part of this Michigan thing with you all. (Plus, I mean, if Moe can play in the league - obviously they’ll take anyone.)Īnd I think it was tough for me for pretty much one reason: I love Michigan. From a basketball perspective, this is the move for me to make right now. And after talking with my coaches and my family, I know it’s something I’m ready for. It’s something I’ve been working extremely hard for. I’m hopeful, more than anything - as playing in the NBA has been a big dream of mine. I’m definitely feeling a lot of emotions about it. I’ve decided to enter the 2021 NBA Draft. I took a leap of faith.Īnd now, two years later, I’m making another decision. Not because Moe did it - but because I wanted to do it my way. It meant I’d have to take a leap of faith.Īnd after months of going back and forth in my head about it (and against the advice and expectations of almost everybody at home), that’s what I did. It meant flying halfway around the world, to live alone, in a whole different culture - the opposite of a comfortable choice. But still … college in the States, that was basically a mystery. ![]() And I had good conversations with Coach Howard and his staff. My brother, Moe, of course gave me helpful advice about this option. ![]() On the other hand, I had an offer to play college hoops in Ann Arbor. Playing professionally in the Bundesliga, that’s a great honor. I knew if I chose this option I would be happy. On the one hand, I had an offer to play pro basketball at home with Alba Berlin. I had to choose between two things - and both were really appealing to me. Beate and Axel have raised two wonderful young men.”Īll eyes will now turn to Isaiah Livers, to see whether he will follow Wagner back to Ann Arbor or remain in the NBA Draft.A couple of years ago, I had a decision to make. I have said Franz is an emerging basketball talent however, it is his demeanor, integrity and character that I love even more. “His leadership, work ethic and desire to make not only himself, but his teammates better is incredible. He really took the opportunity to look into everything he could before making his final decision - a decision we are elated for,” said U-M’s David and Meredith Kaplan head men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard. “Franz and I have had many wonderful conversations since the end of the season. ![]() I am very much looking forward to getting back to Ann Arbor and living that again.” This first season was a transition, competitive, fun and one of growth. “Returning to Michigan is the right step for me not only as a basketball player, but as a person, too. “It’s important for me to thank Coach Howard and the staff for not only giving me the time to think about this decision, but also help me gather as much information as I could,” said Wagner. Here’s what Wagner had to say in a release: And with Zavier Simpson and Jon Teske departing, Wagner should help alleviate some of the team’s lineup concerns. Not only is he a great player, but he fills a key need for the Wolverines on the wing. Simply put, Wagner’s return is a significant one. Wagner also showed some major promise down the stretch, scoring double-digits in the team’s final seven games of the season. He started 27 games for the Wolverines last season and averaged 11.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. Most fans hoped Wagner could fill in a clear void in Michigan’s starting lineup last season.Īnd Wagner lived up to the hype last year. He was rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports and the No. This is huge news for a Michigan program that is already seeing a few key departures.Īs a recruit, Wagner arrived in Ann Arbor with a considerable amount of hype. Michigan announced earlier this week that rising sophomore forward Franz Wagner will be foregoing the 2020 NBA Draft and returning to the Michigan Wolverines.
